Causes of the Revolution
French and Indian War
Proclamation of 1763
Quartering Act & Stamp Act
The Quartering Act forced colonists to house British soldiers. Soldiers were sent to protect the Proclamation of 1763 and secure obedience from the colonists. Britain sought to recover financial losses from the French and Indian war with the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act taxed all paper goods. As a result, colonists boycotted paper goods and became increasingly frustrated with British rule.

Townshend Act
Although the Stamp Act was repealed, the British government still wanted money from the colonists. They enacted the Townshend Act which taxed tea, glass, lead, paints, and paper. This enraged the colonists who boycotted English goods and resulted in violent protests. Colonists would not pay taxes unless they were represented in Parliament. |
