Henry Hudson
Born: 1565 in England
Died: June 22, 1611 in Hudson Bay, Canada
Sponsor: Henry Hudson was hired by the Dutch East India Company, a Netherlands company who profited from the exchange of goods across the continent. The Dutch East India Company was looking for a faster route to Asia.
Hudson's Motivations: Hudson's wanted to find a faster route to Asia. He believed there was a northwest passage across North America that would connect ships to the Pacific Ocean.
Expedition: Cartier set sail in 1609 in a ship called The Half Moon. Hudson sailed to Novia Scotia, Canada and then sailed south on what is now called the Hudson River. Hudson is credited for discovering present day New York City. This location was cited as a great port for trading.
A 1610-1611 trip through the Hudson Strait and into the Hudson River led to a mutiny of the crew. There were harsh winter conditions with no end in sight. Hudson died when his crew abandoned him, his son, and seven others on a small open boat in the Hudson Bay.
Hudson never found a northwest passage to the Pacific Ocean.
