John Cabot

Sponsor: John Cabot gained sponsorship from King Henry VII of England. King Henry VII watched as Spain brought foreign goods into the Spanish market and began to colonize new lands. England did not want to be left behind, and sent John Cabot on his own expedition.
John Cabot's Motivations: Cabot wished to find a northwest passage. This passage would allow him to cut though North America to Asia. Cabot also wished to bring back goods to the English market.
First Expedition: Cabot set said in May 1497 with a small ship of 18 men. Cabot landed in June 24, 1497 in what is now Nova Soctia, Canada. He was the first explorer to land in North America. Cabot claimed the land for England.
Second Expedition: Cabot proposed a second expedition. He wished to travel through the North Atlantic to reach the island of Cipangu, which is now Japan. Cabot set sail with five ships and 200 men. It is presumed that a severe storm hit Cabot's ships. Cabot died a sea.
